Rockaway Park MGP Containment Barrier

The area of the disused "Rockaway Park MGP" gas production plant is located in the Rockaway Park neighborhood, at the intersection of Beach Channel Drive and Beach 108th Street, in Queens (NY), in Queens County. The area, subject to pollution for years, is bordered to the north by the protected nature reserve of "Jamaica Bay”. The aim of the works was to eliminate the potential risks of migration of pollutants present in the subsoil. To do this the project involved the construction of a cutoff wall placed inside a double row of metal sheet piles driven into the ground.

The treated soil is quite heterogeneous and includes more superficial anthropic layers, composed of fill material used to expand the peninsula, and layers of marine and fluvioglacial origin formed mainly by sands interspersed with thin layers of clays and silts.
All Jet Grouting treatments were installed using a triple-fluid technology PS3 (air, water and grout) and bottom-up installation procedure. On the basis of previous experience in highly polluted site, equipment and methods were used to recovery polluted injection fluid (preventer directly placed on the concrete slab, watertight tank and suction pump) to allow transfer to treatment areas without leakage and avoiding contact with workers.

Continuous monitoring of Jet Grouting parameters using PRS3 real time data collection system and vertical measurement at each grout column were provided as well as extensive verification and field test prior to the production work.
